Transantarctic Expedition-First Woman To Ski Solo Across Antarctica

"with the first step of my journey i start the long road home..." read her first tweet as she set off across the frozen tundra...alone. Felicity Aston successfully skied across Antarctica alone for a total of 59 days and 1,055 miles. Her trek began on November 25th, 2011 and included conditions such as white-outs to baking-hot sunshine. She even tried her hand at washing clothes along the way: "Tried to do some laundry in the tent this evening. Didn't go well. I now have frozen knickers," read another tweet.

Aston's trip was designed to raise money for the British Antarctic Monument Trust to help fund a monument in the Falkland Islands "to commemorate those killed in Antarctica while in pursuit of science," on Monday night she had blown away her goal (1,700 British pounds or $2,650) by 128% with £2,181 or $3,395.

The route included starting at the Ross Ice Shelf across the Transantarctic Mountains to the South Pole, and finishing at her destination on the Ronne Ice Shelf on the opposite coast of the continent. She had only one day of rest during her journey, at the pole itself.
