Benchmade Onslaught Review

A brand name I've learned to love and trust is Benchmade. For Christmas a few years back my dad gave me a Benchmade Tanto-style folding blade, and for me it's been Benchmade ever since. While at the 2010 Summer Outdoor Retailer Show Yeti and I got the chance to see a few knives in person and talk to some of the folks from Benchmade. One of the knives that stuck out to me at the time, was the Benchmade Onslaught. I normally prefer a much smaller blade like the Benchmade mini-Griptillian, but there are definitely times when an all around bigger bulkier knife comes in handy. This knife looks to have the durability of a sturdy straight blade survival knife, but it's made in the convenience of a folding blade. While backpacking through the Lost Creek Wilderness of Pike National Forest in CO, I couldn't help, but notice the obvious size of the blade in my pocket. It was the length not the weight of the blade that had my attention, but it really wasn't that bad. The more I hiked the less I noticed it, and soon I didn't notice it at all. During this trip we really pounded on the knife, for instance we used logs to hammer the blade into other logs to split wood, we used the serration for sawing, whittled with the edge, shaved magnesium, drilled with the tip, and used the knife for all other uses around the campfire (opening packages, cutting food, etc.) and it held up remarkably well. It's a Benchmade blade, and it's legendary quality did not disappoint. We really laid into it when hammering it with logs, and I'm not talking about some half-assed taps, we literally smashed it as hard as we could. We actually made it a point to intentionally hit the joint to test it's durability. We would never do this to a knife and don't recommend you doing it, but we wanted to make sure it stood up to the abuse. We are happy to report that this is one tough puppy! If you're the type of adventurer that likes a big knife, or usually carries a fixed blade, you won't be disappointed with the Onslaught.
